2 Tips For Choosing A Pediatrician For Your Baby

Blog

If you are either getting ready to or have already given birth to your first child, you may feel overwhelmed with making decisions, including choosing a pediatrician for your baby. If so, use the following tips to get you started with selecting the right doctor for you and your new baby's needs.

1.  Visit the Office to Get a Feel for the Atmosphere

Up until this point, you may have been reading through lists, perusing pamphlets, and making phone calls to gather information about the pediatricians in your area. However, if you really want to get a feel for the overall atmosphere of their offices, plan on a day or two to visit each one.

While you are visiting an office, look around at the waiting room. Does the room have colorful pictures on the wall with plenty of toys or books to keep the children occupied while they wait? Or, is the waiting room stark and bare for the most part, giving off a cold feeling?

Especially for a doctor that is dealing with children, they should have a basic understanding of what children need and want. If a waiting room seems cold, there is a chance that the doctor may be as well.

However, if there are plenty of toys for various ages available, this gives off a warm, caring atmosphere. This type of atmosphere often reflects the warmth of the doctor and their staff.

2.  Ask about the Doctor's Availability

While visiting an office that gives you a caring atmosphere, do not be afraid to ask questions while you are there. You can often get some answers from the receptionist or even a nurse, depending on if the office is busy or not. Or, you can either ask to speak to the doctor or set up a meeting so that you can meet them and learn more about them.

Whomever you speak with during your initial visit, ask them about the doctor's availability. Since children can run fast fevers or have unexpected symptoms, you want a doctor whom you can call at any time of the day. Also, see if they have time slots set aside for such occasions so that you do not have to wait to have your child seen.

Of all of the decisions you make regarding your new baby, choosing the right doctor for them is one of the most important. As you speak with various pediatricians, do not be afraid to ask them as many questions as possible to help allay any fears you have when deciding on one with which to entrust your baby's health.
