Some Things You Need to Know about Getting Lasik

Blog

If you wear contacts or glasses, you might be considering getting Lasik at some point. There are many people who have gotten Lasik who are pleased with the results and have enjoyed a life free of corrective lenses. If you are thinking about getting Lasik, there are some things you need to know about getting the surgery done. Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions.

Do You Need to Prepare Your Eyes Before the Surgery?

There will be some things that you need to before the surgery to prep your eyes. First, you will be asked to not wear contacts for a certain amount of time. This is because the contacts can damage the cornea, and you need to have a perfectly healthy cornea before you get the surgery. In fact, if you have worn contacts exclusively for years, you may not be a good candidate for Lasik because excessive use of contacts can disqualify you from getting the surgery.

You may also need to use a special eye drop to prep your eyes to make sure they aren't dry before the surgery. Otherwise, it is a pretty simply procedure.

What Is the Healing Like?

Many people think that getting surgery on the eyes would be a painful surgery and difficult healing process. Luckily, this is not the case. In fact, both the healing and procedure are very simple. The procedure, from start to finish, shouldn't take more than an hour or so. The doctor will locally numb the eye so that you don't feel any pain. After the procedure, you may have to wear bandages for just a short amount of time, usually less than an hour, and then you will be able to go home.

For a couple days following the surgery you may need to use eye drops to help keep your eyes moist. You might be asked to wear sunglasses and to avoid wearing any kind of makeup on your eyes. The eyes should heal on their own, and you will notice that your eyesight is better than ever.

Does Insurance Pay for Lasik?

Some people have insurance plans that will help to pay for Lasik, but usually it will come out of health savings accounts. Lasik is seen as an elective surgery, so in most cases you pay out of pocket. But it is worth talking to your insurance provider about any discounts or options they might have.
